Leaders Plus Round 3 launch & field trip

On Sept 30th, the third round of Leaders Plus got underway, with a new case study and ramped-up expectations for the programme – and the new candidates. The launch was kicked off by Maggie Rafalowicz of Leaders Plus supporter Campbell Tickell, followed by a course overview from FoL director Lisa Taylor and a thought-provoking exercise on learning and leadership. Outgoing FoL treasurer and mentor Ben Denton shared ideas as mentors joined the second half, after which the whole group got into a lively (and ostensibly leadership-focused) discussion of Jeremy Corbyn’s strengths, weaknesses and potential mentors. After some cool-down time and networking, joined by event hosts Lewis Silkin, the candidates wrapped the evening with a get-acquainted dinner.

The group reconvened next morning for a first visit to case study site Hackney Wick & Fish Island, where planning authority London Legacy Development Corporation is focused on retaining affordable workspace amidst intense demand for housing. FLL alumnus and mentor Esther Everett set the scene with a discussion of the area masterplan, followed by short talks from LB Tower Hamlets’s Jack Ettinger on transport considerations, Peabody’s Jake Brodetsky on Neptune Wharf and Pollard Thomas Edwards’s Hamish Kilford-Brown on the Stone Brothers project. For all of them, responding to severance – notably from the canals, the A12 and derelict yards and warehouses – was a critical issue.

Everett and colleague Erin Byrne then guided the group on a walk interspersed with drawing exercises led by artist Ilga Leimanis. These were designed to help candidates stop and see a regeneration area with fresh eyes – and a non-expert perspective. Thanks in part to glorious weather, the visit was a resounding success.

Presenters from the launch will rejoin the programme later, and for the first time, candidates will use the case study as the basis for a more public presentation on regeneration options for London when they wrap in July 2016. Watch this space for developments before then…
